With today's high-speed Internet connections and wireless technology, portable memory devices are slowly becoming obsolete. A noticeable nail in their coffin is Dropbox, due to its smart and clean functionality. With this lightweight application, you can access your personal files anywhere in the world, from any computer or from various mobile devices. Thanks to its remarkable simplicity and ease of use, synchronizing data between several machines can be done just by dropping the files into a folder.

Installing Dropbox and creating an online account can be done in under a minute, after which you can start enjoying the application's functionality, without any distractions. Once installed and launched, Dropbox will create a special folder on your local disk and it will monitor it at all times. Anything you store in this folder will be uploaded to the cloud immediately, without any further user input.

Uploaded files can be accessed on a web-based user interface, with any browser. Once you log into your account, you will find your files in the same folders structure as on the local disk. If you create new folders or move files around, the application will make the same changes automatically in all other locations, regardless if the original modifications are made in the local Dropbox folder or in the cloud.

Dropbox can be linked to several PCs, Macs and mobile devices. All you have to do is install the application and log into your account. Uploaded data will be downloaded automatically on all linked machines, once they are turned on and connected to the Internet. To put it in simpler terms, if you need to take a file with you, all you have to do is store it in the local Dropbox folder. When you need to access that file, on another machine, you can either log onto the web interface and download it or find it already downloaded, if the machine is linked to your Dropbox account.

The application provides various sharing options as well. The easiest way to share one or more files is to right click them and select an option for retrieving a share link. The generated link is copied automatically to the clipboard, so you only need to send it to your contacts. The same can be done on the web interface, where you can also choose to share your files on Facebook and Twitter or send them by email to one or more contacts. Another excellent feature is the possibility of creating shared folders. You can allow other users to access these folders at any time and store their own files. Thus, if someone needs to send you a file, he can simply put in in the shared folder and you will find it on your Mac, PC and mobile device, without doing anything.

Pros

The application is capable of synchronizing files between several machines and mobile devices, without too much user input. Files can be uploaded to the cloud immediately, just by copying or moving them to a folder. Once uploaded, you can share them and access them from anywhere in the world.

Cons

There are no design flaws or functionality gaps to speak of. If you are still relying on USB flash drives to transport your data, then you should definitely start using Dropbox, if you want to make everything much faster and easier.
